Applies to Symbols for iPhone and iPad (including the Symbols keyboard and widgets), Symbols for Mac, Symbols for Android (including its keyboard and widgets), and this website.
In short
- No accounts. You never sign up, and I don't receive your name, email address or Apple or Google account.
- Your stuff stays on your device. Favorites, History, settings and the text you type into Fancy Text or search are stored locally.
- The keyboard never records what you type. It only inserts the characters you tap.
- A few third-party services show ads, handle purchases and report usage and crashes. They receive limited technical data, described below.
Who I am
Symbols ("the App") is developed and maintained by Alexandr Nadtoka ("I", "me", "my"). This policy explains what information the App and the services built into it collect, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Data stored on your device
The following stays on your device and is never sent to me or to any third party:
- Your Favorites and History (characters you copied or inserted recently)
- Your display settings (grouping, filters) and copy feedback settings (sound, haptics)
- The text you type into search and Fancy Text
On iPhone and iPad, Favorites and History are kept in an App Group container on your device so the Symbols keyboard and widgets can show them. On every platform this data is removed when you delete the App.
Symbols keyboard
The Symbols keyboard (iPhone, iPad and Android) does not record, store or transmit anything you type. It only inserts the characters you tap and does not make any network requests. Characters you insert are added to your History (on iPhone and iPad, only with Full Access, see below). The keyboard also keeps a count of how many characters you inserted, and the App later reports that number to Firebase Analytics. Which characters you inserted and anything else you type are never reported.
On iPhone and iPad, Allow Full Access is optional. The keyboard uses it only to read your Favorites and History from the App Group container on your device and to add inserted characters to your History. Without it, the keyboard still works but can't show your Favorites and Recents.
Clipboard
When you copy a character, its code or styled text, the App writes it to the system clipboard. The App never reads your clipboard on its own. Text gets into the App only when you paste it yourself.
Third-party services
The App includes the services below, which process data under their own privacy policies. Which ones are included depends on the platform.
| Service | iPhone & iPad | Mac | Android |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AdMob | ✓ | – | ✓ |
| Google User Messaging Platform | ✓ | – | ✓ |
| Firebase Analytics | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Firebase Crashlytics | ✓ | – | ✓ |
| RevenueCat | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
- Google AdMob shows ads to people without Symbols Pro. AdMob may collect device information, your IP address and the approximate location derived from it, and ad interaction data, to serve and measure ads and prevent fraud. On iPhone and iPad the App does not ask for permission to track you, so AdMob can't access your device's advertising identifier (IDFA). On Android, AdMob may use your device's advertising ID, which you can reset or delete in your device's settings. How Google uses data from apps.
- Google User Messaging Platform asks for your consent to personalized ads where the law requires it (for example in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland) and stores your choice.
- Firebase Analytics (Google) collects usage data to help me understand how the App is used: app opens, session length, device model, operating system version, country, and which features you use. For example, it can record which Unicode character you copied (its code, such as U+2192), which Fancy Text style you picked, or how long a search was. It never receives the text you type, your search terms or your Favorites list. Firebase Privacy.
- Firebase Crashlytics (Google) collects crash reports, including the device model, operating system version and the state of the App when it crashed, so I can fix bugs.
- RevenueCat processes purchases of Symbols Pro. It receives an anonymous app user ID, your purchase history and basic device information. Payments are handled by Apple or Google, and I never see your payment details. RevenueCat Privacy Policy.
I don't link any of this data to your name, email address, or Apple or Google account.
This website
This website (symbols-keyboard.app) uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and does not identify you: visits are counted from anonymized, aggregated data such as the page, the referring site, country, browser and device type, and the data can't be used to track you across sites or days. Vercel Web Analytics privacy. The page also loads its font from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address to deliver it. Google Fonts privacy.
Your choices
- Ad consent: change it at any time in the App under Settings → Privacy Settings (shown where consent is required).
- No ads: Symbols Pro removes ads, and with them the AdMob data collection.
- Keyboard Full Access (iPhone, iPad): turn it off in Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Symbols.
- Keyboard (Android): turn it off in your device's keyboard settings (usually Settings → System → Keyboard).
- History: clear it at any time from the App's History screen.
- Everything local: deleting the App removes all data stored on your device.
Data retention
I don't run servers that store your data. Data processed by the third-party services above is kept according to their own retention policies.
Children's privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a revised date.
